Valentine’s Day is usually associated with romantic couples — but who says we can’t broaden that celebration of love to include the whole family? Involving kids in Valentine’s Day festivities creates lasting memories and teaches important lessons about love, friendship, and gratitude. It’s a perfect chance to show children that love goes beyond romantic relationships — it’s in every small act of care and kindness at home.
In this post, we’ll share creative, kid-friendly ways to celebrate Valentine’s Day in the U.S. — from simple crafts and themed recipes to games and learning activities. You’ll find ideas to make the day special for every family member, whether you’re crafting together, baking heart-shaped treats, or playing kind-hearted games.
Check out some of my favorite ideas below — and don’t forget to share yours with us!
Home Movie Night!
Turn Valentine’s Day into a cozy family movie night with the kids — a lovely way to celebrate love together. Pick family-friendly films about friendship and love, such as Beauty and the Beast, Toy Story, or Despicable Me (or streamable holiday-friendly picks available on your usual platforms).
Make the living room comfy with blankets and throw pillows, and don’t forget the popcorn. Add themed snacks like heart-shaped cookies, chocolate-covered strawberries, or valentine-themed cupcakes to make it festive.
Before the movie starts, have the kids make simple “tickets” or mini valentines to hand out as admission — a fun craft that doubles as a keepsake. With these easy touches, you’ll create warm memories and strengthen family bonds while celebrating the holiday.

Cooking with Kids
Valentine’s Day is a great chance to get kids into the kitchen and make simple, themed treats together. Try heart-shaped cookies, strawberry smoothies, and chocolate-covered strawberries — all easy, delicious, and kid-friendly.
Let children decorate cookies with colorful icing and sprinkles to spark creativity. For smoothies, blend fresh strawberries with yogurt and a little honey for a tasty, healthier option. For chocolate-covered strawberries, melt milk or semi‑sweet chocolate, dip the berries, and let them set on parchment paper.
These activities mix fun, learning, and tasty rewards the whole family can enjoy. Cooking together is a sweet way to make Valentine’s Day memorable.

Crafts to Do with Kids
Turn Valentine’s Day into a burst of creativity with easy, fun crafts kids will love. Handmade valentines are a timeless activity — use construction paper, markers, stickers, washi tape, and kid-safe glue so each child can make unique cards for classmates, friends, and family.
Heart decorations like paper garlands or heart mobiles are great group projects: have kids cut heart shapes and decorate them with glitter, paint, sequins, and ribbon to hang around the house or classroom.
Love-themed bookmarks are another simple keepsake — sturdy cardstock strips, ribbons, stickers, and markers make practical, heartfelt gifts for young readers.
These crafts entertain and teach fine motor and creative skills while making Valentine’s Day personal and meaningful for the whole family.

Valentine’s Day Treasure Hunt
Planning a Valentine’s-themed treasure hunt is a fun, active way to celebrate love and friendship with kids. It’s great for teamwork and problem-solving.
Write clues tied to love and friendship, then hide them around the house or yard so each clue leads to the next. Use riddles, rhymes, or simple tasks (draw a heart, give a hug, or name someone you love). Tailor difficulty to kids’ ages.
At the end, reward them with small prizes or treats—stickers, heart-shaped cookies, mini toys, or valentines. This turns Valentine’s Day into an adventure of giggles and discovery while making warm family memories.

Coloring Fun
Coloring books are a simple, relaxing Valentine’s activity for kids that sparks creativity and conversation — set out themed coloring pages (hearts, animals with valentines, friendly monsters) with crayons, markers, and stickers, and let kids choose colors and designs; you can make it special by playing soft music, offering heart-shaped snacks, or turning finished pages into valentines, garlands, or framed keepsakes to give to family and friends.
